Musical in the City - The Wedding Singer

Wedding Singer - Victoria Theatre program
Mijo and I went to see Bay Area Musical's production of The Wedding Singer at the Victoria Theater in the Mission District. The tickets were Christmas gifts from our loved ones A and B.

It was a small production compared to the Broadway shows staged at the Orpheum, Golden Gate or Curran but it was good nevertheless. The production felt more  intimate and yet casual.

Musical in the City - Aladdin

Aladdin - Poster bw
Aladdin is based on one of my favorite fairy tales when I was a child and Disney turned it into a movie when I was a teenager and then it turned into a Broadway show a couple of years ago. This is why I was very excited when I heard Aladdin The Musical was coming to San Francisco.

It didn't disappoint. It is one of my all time favorite Broadway shows!

Musical in the City - Something Rotten

Something Rotten - SHN booklet bw
Mijo and I took our friend Dinah's advice to see the musical Something Rotten. After a long time of not seeing a musical, we were so happy that Something Rotten did not fail to entertain.

We absolutely enjoyed seeing it and totally recommend it to anyone to go see it.

Musical in the City - Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Hedwig and the Angry Inch - Posters and People bwFirst, thanks so much to my good friend Dinah for suggesting to see this musical. I forgot if she had seen this show before in NYC. If she did, she must have really liked it to see it again here in SF.

Second, I absolutely enjoyed the show. This is probably one of the most demanding musicals, in the acting and singing department, I've ever seen. I liked it so much I might just see it again this week.

Beautiful - Orpheum Theatre bw
Beautiful: The Carol King Musical is finally in town till September 16. We were both free one week night last week and Mijo got tickets so we went.

I haven't seen Carol King in concert but going to see the musical made it feel like it and more. Mijo and I totally enjoyed the show.

Musical in the City - The Wicked

The Wicked - BART ad bwThe wildly successful musical is back in San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre and for the third time I went to see it.

I can remember the last two times I saw the show and I can tell the difference between the shows. Of course, it was still great seeing it the third time.  I was just reminded again how good this show is.

Musical in the City - Once

Once - SHN by roland luistro, on Flickr
Once The Musical traveled to San Francisco and was only here for two weeks. Thanks to my good friend Dinah's timely reminder, Mijo and I was able to see it.

The music and songs will make you fall in love all over again. Mijo and I totally enjoyed the musical.

Phantom of the Opera - Orpheum Theatre outside by roland luistro, on Flickr
After so many years, I was able to see one of my favortie musicals the Phantom of the Opera. This one is a new production. Same classic songs.

Musical in the City - Matilda

Matilda - Orpheum Theatre bw by roland luistro, on FlickrMatilda the musical is in town through August 15, 2015.  We didn't have plans to see it at all but we saw it from the orchestra seats for less than half the price.

Matilda is a funny, touching, imaginative and...very funny. The songs and music are also appealing and memorable. For us, this musical is five stars.

Musical in the City - Motown the Musical

Motown The Musical - TicketA couple of friends at work saw Motown The Musical and they have nothing but praise for this production. I was skeptical at first but Mijo and I went to check it out eventually.

You know what? This is like watching a concert with all the Motown greats in it. This is probably one of the most entertaining Broadway shows I've seen it was like going to a music festival.

Musical in the City - The Book of Mormon

Book Of Mormom - PosterMijo and I were lucky to find limited view seats tickets to The Book of Mormon at the Orpheum Theatre last month amid the Holiday rush.

We missed seeing the musical the last time it was in San Francisco a few years ago so we made sure and prayed hard that we find tickets to this show. And we did and we liked the music, acting and energy of the production.

Musical in the City - The Lion King at the Orpheum Theatre

The Lion King - AdsThe musical The Lion King is finally back in San Francisco. Can you believe I have not seen this show before? Mijo and I missed it in Las Vegas two years ago when it was playing at the Mandalay Bay. In San Francisco, the theatre tickets are extra hard to find because the shows are usually sold out during the holiday season. Luckily, Mijo found limited view Orchestra seats!

On top of our usual shows-to-see during the Christmas holiday, we still managed to see this show last week. Thanks Mijo for the tickets for I truly enjoyed this show!

Christmas in the City - American Conservatory Theatre's A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol - ProgramAmerican Conservatory Theatre's (A.C.T.) live stage production of Charles Dickens' The Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas is also another San Francisco Bay Area holiday tradition that I try to do every Christmas season. Mijo and I have been watching this the past years but this year he said he needed a rest. I had a good laugh after hearing this from him since he is the one who introduced me to see this show years ago.

Anyway, Dinah (and her friend who is also named Dinah) and Karen went with me this year. A.C.T. added changes to the production and made the performance an even more festive treat!

Theatre in the City - The Scottsboro Boys

Scottsboro Boys - TicketMijo and I saw The Scottsboro Boys at the American Conservatory Theatre three weeks ago and I thought I should post this blog before the show closes on July 22nd.

We totally loved this half live theatre half musical considering how serious the theme of this production really is. The cast was able to entertain wildly while sharing a sad chapter in American history.

Musical in the City - American Idiot

American Idiot - TicketI missed the World Premiere of the musical American Idiot at Berkeley Rep in 2009. I remember another musical, The Wicked, was back in town and was playing at the same time as  American Idiot. I had missed The Wicked when it had its World Premiere in  San Francisco years ago and I was not going to miss it again. So in 2009, I had to make a choice between the two musicals. Why did they both have to be playing at the same season?

After over two years, American Idiot is back in the Bay Area and I was not going to miss it again even if there was another equally good musical playing at the same time.  I went, I saw and I liked it!

Musical in the City - Monty Python's SPAMALOT

Spamalot - After the ShowMijo and I saw the musical Spamalot last week and it is probably the funniest musical we've seen since Avenue Q. Though I don't humm any of their songs the way I sometimes do from the more popular and memorable musicals, I think Spamalot is very entertaining.

There was a time when the crowd couldn't stop laughing because the scene was too funny. This is my kind of show!
