I love Sunday Streets. This is the time I get to explore a part of the city while getting our walking and exercise. A couple of Sundays ago, Sunday Streets went to the Great Highway and Golden Gate Park.
The weather was great and we got to know a part of the city that I have not been to on foot. Thank you Sunday Streets.
Looking at the event map, the route stretched from Sloat Blvd on the Great Highway through the Golden Gate Park. That's a long way to walk, at least for us. We decided to linger on the Great Highway but on the side closer to Sloat Blvd.
Cool breeze and clean air. Clear day and no fog at all. Lots of people biking, running and walking. We were just there to admire the scenery and take in the moment. I can't help but think about all the residents who live in the area and get to enjoy this scene every day.
I've only passed by this part of the city by driving through the Great Highway to go to the Cliff House. We finally got to explore this area on foot. We learned that the area is a protection area for Snowy Plover birds. Dogs must be on the leash during overwintering season - July 1st thru May 15. That's almost the entire year.
I felt sand on my face as we descend down to the beach. The strong winds carry the sand and this is why the Great Highway is closed several days in a year during windy days because sand accumulate on the highway.
We walked some more and got to the corner of Taraval St. and noticed these mosaic sculptures on the roundabout. I noticed groups of friends and families were out walking with their pet dogs.
And there was music. Most of the booths during the event were located in the Golden Gate Park. I noticed there were kids learning how to ride a bicycle, another group of kids were flying their kites.
We found this mosaic near the beach. This one is near the corner of Rivera St. and the Great Highway. We stopped here to enjoy the calming scenery.
The big waves create a relaxing chorus of breaking waves. It is amazing how soothing the sound was.
I also noticed the dessert plants thriving on the sidewalks of the Great Highway.
After a couple of hours of walking, we headed back to where we parked earlier and got a quick lunch at Pasquale's.
What a relaxing and active weekend. Thanks Sunday Streets!
