Filipino Film in the City - The New Filipino Cinema at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

New Filipino Cinema - Program and tickets bw
For the 3rd time in a row, Mijo and I saw several Filipino film at the New Filipino Cinema at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

As always, it does not disappoint. We love the carefully curated line up of film. We can't wait for next year's selections.

The New Filipino Cinema 2017 ran from August 17, 2017 through September 3, 2017 at YBCA's screening room. Unfortunately, I'm blogging this right after the last weekend of its  screenings. The selection of film was curated by Philbert Ortiz Dy and Joel Shepard. Thank you guys for this year's selection. We totally loved it!

We saw five out of the thirteen films they were screening and we loved all five that we saw.  Great acting! The first film we saw was our favorite among this year's batch entitled Apocalypse Child directed by Mario Cornejo. The film is set in the town of Baler, which is east of the island of Luzon, is a popular surfing destination and a production location of the movie Apocalypse Now. The story revolves around Ford who is a surf instructor and a rumored love child of one of the casts of the movie Apocalypse Now. We also saw Sunday Beauty Queen directed by Baby Ruth Villarama. She was present during one of the screenings of the film for a Q&A session. We also liked Ma' Rosa directed by Brillante Mendoza, Bliss by Jerrold Tarog and Mercury is Mine by Jason Paul Laxamana.  The movie Seklusyon by Erik Matti was also in the list but we already saw this movie in Manila in December during the Metro Manila Film Festival.

During one of the Curator Talks, they mentioned another Filipino movie entitled Kita Kita was being screened at local Cinemark Theaters. Mijo and I saw it too and loved it! That was a bonus!

I'm already excited and looking forward to next year's line up. Thank you YBCA for supporting and highlighting Filipino film!
