Musical in the City - Something Rotten

Something Rotten - SHN booklet bw
Mijo and I took our friend Dinah's advice to see the musical Something Rotten. After a long time of not seeing a musical, we were so happy that Something Rotten did not fail to entertain.

We absolutely enjoyed seeing it and totally recommend it to anyone to go see it.

We got lucky and got tickets on the last minute on a Thursday evening.

Since we got the tickets two hours before the show, we had time to go get snacks. The nearby Gyro King is a good place to get sustenance.

I saw this view of the Orpheum Theatre from a Muni bus shed and I loved the view from there. I've never seen the front of the theatre from that vantage point.

The opening was not as explosive compared to the other shows. I later realized that the show was building up and it was very effective. It kept us entertained the whole time. I love how the main characters Nick Bottom played by Rob McClure and Nigel Bottom played by Josh Grisetti took me out of my seat and into the stages and theatres of Elizabethan England. The costumes and props were how I imagined the Renaissance.

Because of Nick Bottom's hunger for success and a name that is at least as good as The Bard's, he did things that would get him where he wants to be no matter the cost. With the help of someone who can see the future Nostradamus played by Blake Hammond, he pieced together a musical performance where the scenes are taken from the timeless musicals hundreds of years into the future. The result is like a Frankenstein of a musical. It is hilarious. It was a hot mess. Like what my friend Dinah says, fans of Broadway musicals can totally relate.

We loved the production numbers, the tap dancing, the rap singing with tap dancing, the rock star Shakespeare played by Adam Pascal and the minstrel played by Nick Rashad Burroughs and the rest of the cast and crews. You guys did a great job!
