Musical in the City - Kinky Boots

Kinky Boots - Signs by roland luistro, on FlickrThis is a late post. In fact, this is a really late post because the show ran through December 28. It has been over for two months now.

However, I feel like I have to blog this show because it is a brilliant show with the right message. I would see it again when it comes back in town.

It was a coincidence that Mijo and I got the Kinky Boots DVD in Netflix weeks before the Kinky Boots touring production came in town. That movie starred Chiwetel Eliofor and Joel Edgerton. I thought they were as brilliant as the movie.

Lucky for us in San Francisco, from December 2 through 28 2014, the touring company of Kinky Boots came to town. It was hard to get tickets but the story ended well because we got tickets early.

Kinky Boots - Orpheum Theatre

Basically, the story is about a man named Charlie who inherited his father's shoe factory but the factory is having problems with sales. One night, Charlie was walking on a London street when he recued a drag queen named Lola from a group of thugs. This event led to Charlie's idea of creating womens shoes that are strong enough to be worn by men or Lola.
Lola and Charlie worked together to diversify the product to keep the business afloat. It is based on the book by Harvey Fierstein.

  Kinky Boots - Stage

Kyle Taylor Parker as Lola was superb and Steven Booth as Charlie was great. Just like in the movie, Lola and Charlie on stage was perfect. They had chemistry. The company, especially Lola's Angels, acted absolutely wonderful and they looked like they were really having a good time. Very entertaining performances! It is amazing how they can jump and dance in those frighteningly high heels.

  Kinky Boots - Playbill

The music was written by one of my childhood favorites Cyndi Lauper. Unlike most Broadway tunes, I can listen to the soundtrack just like I listen to my favorite pop rock music. They are that good.
  Kinky Boots - CD

Outside the doors, there are life sized picture of the red boots where people can stand behind and take pictures of themselves as if they have the boots on. I thought that was a fun addition to the normal posters they have outside the theatre.
Kinky Boots - Boots

I highly recommend this show to anyone. For me, it is a story of acceptance in a fun and entertaining manner.  In fact, this Filipino guy will definitely see them again when they come back to San Francisco.
